Kaira's 9th Birthday Party

Kaira wanted a Science themed party this year.

We decided to have the party at home so that we could do some cool experiments.

Experiment #1 - Volcano!!

The classic baking soda and vinegar volcano... such fun!

Kaira adding baking soda to the 'Volcano'.

  Experimenting with different colors...

Experiment #2 - Slime!!

Kaira and her friends took turns adding the ingredients into the measuring cup until we had... SLIME!

Then we took turns making everyone hold it... ewww!

Experiment #3 - Geyser

Coke + Mentos = Geyser!!

I haven't done this one since I was a kid.  I'd forgotten how quickly it starts spurting and how high it shoots!  And fast!!!  So fast, in fact, that we didn't manage to catch a picture of the geyser in action.  After dropping the Mentos in, I didn't even get a chance to move my hand out of the way it started so fast (this is why they recommend diet... you don't end up sticky!).  It must have shot up at least 15-20 feet in the air, all in one huge gush... and then it was over as fast as it started.  The kiddos were pretty impressed by this one.

Experiment #4 - Fun with Dry Ice

As everyone knows, dry ice + water = cool eerie looking smoke...

But what happens when you add soap to the equation?

The original experiment was supposed to make one giant bubble across the top of the bowl which would slowly swell and fill with smoke until it burst and released a cloud of smoke.  Well we didn't quite have luck with that.  The picture at left is the closest we got.

But then we just started playing around with the soap/water/dry ice concoction and had fun anyway.  The picture at right shows what the big bubbles looked like when they burst.

At the suggestion of the girls, we even tried adding food coloring to the mix.

They were hoping, or hypothesizing, that the colored liquid would produce colored bubbles.  The bubbles didn't change color, but the girls learned something and had a lot of fun in the process.

The Grand Finale - CAKE!!

And what would a Science party be without a science cake.

I had a lot of fun making this one.  Everything except the plastic test tube on top is edible... right down to the molded white chocolate beaker and the marshmallow bubbles.
